Our Purpose and Mission

MidCity Excellence Community Learning Center is a non-profit organization whos mission is to foster a unified community capable of enhancing academic outcomes, addressing social challenges, and expanding economic opportunities in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

There are many services that are offered by MidCity staff and guest instructors. We are energized to make positive changes and together with our collaborators we are do just that for the people of our community.

The Mission
Did you know that there are over 12,000 residents living in poverty in Buchanan County? Over 3000 of these are children. The MidCity 54-block area (East of 14th to West of 22nd St & South of Edmond to North of Olive) has the greatest concentration of low-income residents in St. Joseph. This means that many of our kids go to bed without dinner, may not have hot water, or heat their homes with an oven or stove. It also means that many parents do not have a working car or work two jobs in order to make ends meet.

MidCity Excellence (MCE) is passionate about inspiring inner-city families and residents struggling to overcome poverty. Our community education programs are designed to provide direction, hope, and purpose to overcome obstacles and challenges that inhibit self-sufficiency. Each day we directly impact the lives of almost 40 at-risk youth through education and by example. Each summer, our academy attracts nearly 70 students per day for six contiguous weeks. Our programs increase the probability for economic success because we creatively challenge youth in the following areas:

Academics: By providing the "ER" (educational rescue) Academy 4 days per week with Master, certified and retired teachers and with parents/teen mentors.

Career and technological readiness: Each youth is provided 45 minutes of computer training 4 times per week.

Performing Arts: MCE provides many opportunities for success through enrichment, cultural arts and performing arts events.

Recreation: Our programs incorporate recreational components that promote healthy minds, bodies and spirits.

MCE also designs community service events that create healthy relationships, community pride and an appreciation for diversity.

A degree is not required to volunteer at MCE, however if you have a special area of interest or focus it will help to determine an appropriate volunteer activity. Please note: all volunteers working directly with children or youth must have clearance from the Human Resources Dept.
